From fabrication files to a controlled traveler

A manufacturing traveler connects the released design to the work actually performed on a board lot. It should identify the authorized construction, route and inspection evidence. A folder of Gerbers is not a traveler, and a signed traveler does not fix an inconsistent design package.

Start with an immutable release manifest

List the part number, revision, file names and the purpose of each file. Include the fabrication drawing, layer data, drill data, stack-up approval and netlist where supplied. Recording file hashes is a useful project control: it helps distinguish a byte-for-byte match from two files that happen to share a name. A hash proves identity, not engineering correctness.

Arlon’s laminate guide discusses certification and traceability at the material level. A finished-board project needs to connect its own evidence chain beyond that material record. Define the required link among the approved material designation, received lot, board lot and outgoing reports without implying that a material certificate establishes factory qualification.

Use hold points where uncertainty must be resolved

Hold point Release evidence Who resolves an exception?
Data acceptance Manifest, drawing and netlist reconciled Design and CAM review roles
Construction approval Material and stack-up revision agreed Design authority and fabrication engineering
Inspection acceptance Required reports linked to the board lot Quality authority named in the order
Shipment release Exceptions closed or formally accepted Authorized release role

Example: a revised drill file arrives during review

Hypothetical document-control scenario. The original package is revision C. The customer later supplies a drill file labeled revision D, but the stack-up and drawing still show C. Do not replace just the file inside the released package and continue. Record the incoming change, identify affected features and obtain the corresponding approved release or documented deviation.

The resulting traveler should refer to the new authorized package and retain the relationship to the superseded version. If work has already started, the disposition of that work must be explicit. Otherwise, a final inspection report may describe the intended revision without establishing which files actually drove fabrication.

Keep process details with the process owner

The traveler can reference approved internal procedures rather than repeating every process setting in a customer-facing document. Specify the evidence the project requires, and agree how records are retained and retrieved. Avoid publishing generic press or drilling recipes as if they were validated for all Arlon constructions.

At handoff, verify that an inspector can move from a lot identifier to the applicable drawing and acceptance records. The manufacturing overview provides the project sequence; the material directory helps clarify material identity. The traveler supplies the controlled connection between them.

Discuss your fabrication package

Submit project requirements and fabrication files for review. Material suitability, availability and commercial terms require project-specific confirmation.
