What drives the cost of an Arlon PCB

The useful question is not “How many times does Arlon cost more than FR-4?” It is “Which requirements make this particular board expensive, and which changes preserve its function?” Material designation, construction, fabrication route, inspection and order quantity must be held consistent before two quotations can be compared.

Separate one-time work from recurring cost

Ask the quote to identify tooling or setup charges, the unit-price basis, quantity, delivery terms and any special testing. Clarify whether repeat orders retain setup charges and whether a revision triggers new work. A low unit price may exclude evidence or processing that another supplier included.

Hypothetical arithmetic, not a market price or quotation. Assume a project has a setup charge of 180 currency units and a simplified recurring cost of 12 units per board. Ten boards total 180 + 10 × 12 = 300, or 30 each. Fifty total 780, or 15.60 each. The apparent price reduction comes entirely from spreading the assumed fixed cost; it does not prove that real pricing follows this linear model.

Review the physical use of the panel

Eurocircuits’ explanation of its calculator connects panel utilization with pricing. For your project, request the proposed delivery format and ask whether alternative rails, orientations or panel arrangements can reduce waste while remaining acceptable for assembly. A change that lowers bare-board cost can still increase depanelization or assembly work.

Quote difference Possible underlying difference Clarification to request
Lower material line Different grade or construction Exact material and substitution rule
Lower processing line Different via route or finish coverage Matched drawing and process scope
Lower inspection line Different tests or report content Acceptance and evidence list
Shorter stated lead time Different start event or material assumption Definition of the clock and outstanding approvals

Change one variable at a time

Prepare an approved baseline quotation package. Request alternatives against that baseline with the changed requirement highlighted. Examples include a different delivery panel, a relaxed noncritical dimensional tolerance or an alternative finish reviewed for the actual interface. Do not trade away a critical property simply because its cost is visible.

Record each proposed saving together with its effect on design, qualification and procurement. Material availability and fabrication time are separate questions; neither should be represented by an unsupported delivery promise. Use the cost-driver workbench to gather inputs, then share the same fabrication package with each quotation request.

Discuss your fabrication package

Submit project requirements and fabrication files for review. Material suitability, availability and commercial terms require project-specific confirmation.
