Why online estimates need clear assumptions
An online PCB estimate is most useful when its assumptions are visible. A number generated from board area and quantity cannot tell you whether a specialty material has been confirmed, an unusual finish has been reviewed or the requested inspection evidence is included. Treat the estimate as a defined scenario that can be revised as engineering questions close.
Record what the calculator knows
Save the board dimensions, layer count, quantity, thickness, material selection, finish and delivery assumptions with the estimate. Identify whether quantity means individual good boards, assembly panels or production panels. State the currency and whether shipping, taxes, tooling and test charges are included before comparing totals.
A manufacturer’s historical explanation of calculator logic, cited below, discusses how production choices affect a calculated price. It is useful background for cost structure, not a source of current prices or a commitment that a particular material is available today.
Separate confirmed inputs from provisional defaults
| Estimate input | Potential assumption | Action before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Generic family selected | Confirm exact grade and construction |
| Quantity | Panels confused with boards | State delivered-unit basis |
| Testing | Only a default service included | List required reports and coupons |
| Timing | Clock starts at order submission | Clarify engineering and material release conditions |
A sensitivity calculation without a price promise
Hypothetical arithmetic. An illustrative estimate contains 120 currency units of setup and 8 units per delivered board. At 10 boards, the simple total is 120 + 10 × 8 = 200, or 20 per board. At 40 boards, the same simplified model gives 440, or 11 per board. These invented figures illustrate setup allocation only.
The second result is not a forecast of a real quotation: material purchasing increments, panel utilization and process choices may also change with quantity. Run separate, documented scenarios rather than extending one unit price to every volume. If a decision depends on a small difference, obtain reviewed quotations with the same technical scope.
Convert the estimate into a comparable quotation
Send the saved assumptions with the fabrication package. Ask the supplier to identify inclusions, exclusions and unresolved engineering items. Compare offers only after reconciling those differences. A lower initial number may simply omit an item that another offer includes; a higher number may incorporate a requirement you do not actually need.
The Arlon PCB cost guide provides the broader review categories. Use the manufacturing requirements to turn the selected estimate scenario into a clear, reviewable order scope.
Project review
Send your drawing and project requirements for a fabrication review. Identify the board revision, intended material and any acceptance requirements with your attachments.
